Stahn could honestly not even say when it had started.
He'd been going about his business like normal, and now that he was even more familiar with Darilsheid (it was truly amazing how living in a place for a period of time truly made you understand it in a way that visiting couldn't), said business often included greeting people as he went, and going to visit the people he'd made friendships with.
It was larger than Leane, yes, and many things were different, but that didn't mean that he couldn't get to know the people around him. There were still ways to make friends and be part of the community, and Stahn had been determined to find them.
Leon had shown exactly zero interest in it when he'd brought it up before, but that was fine; Stahn could just do this one on his own. As much as he wanted Leon to make more friends and be more social, there were times when Stahn needed to tend to his own social life as well. He was the sort of person who thrived on knowing the people around him and being able to be friendly with them, and while it took a bit more work here than in Leane where he'd always lived, it was still something he was capable of doing.
And there was nothing quite so satisfying as realizing that even as he became more familiar with Darilsheid, Darilsheid was becoming more familiar with him as well.
What Stahn was less aware of was the fact that as said process happened, he was attracting a different sort of attention as well, this one of the female persuasion.
He did look rather cool after all (a thing he wasn't entirely as aware of as he perhaps could have been) and when they got past that and realized that he was a ball of sunshine and warmth, he was endearing in another way. They were always prepared and fond of talking with him, though Stahn failed to realize that it was...really, out of the ordinary or strange in any way.
Leon, on the other hand, did not.
So when Stahn came home with a gift in hand (a bag of cookies, and wasn't it sweet of her, weren't the people here so nice and giving?), Leon's brows drew together in an expression that was more than familiar to Stahn, even though he wasn't entirely sure why that sort of thing would put Leon in a sour mood. Wasn't it a good thing that he was adapting so well to the home that he now shared with Leon...?
Apparently not, because when Stahn offered up a placating, "Everyone is just so nice here, Leon!" Leon's expression grew even more dour, and his response was a muttered, "Yes, I'm sure."
Oh. That didn't sound good at all.
Generally, Stahn was very good at understanding Leon, even despite his moods and prickliness and inability to talk about things straight. It was why he was here, after all; in the end, that connection they'd found had become more important to him than anything else.
Which was why he really didn't enjoy seeing this expression on Leon's face, and really did want to fix. He just...didn't know how.
Leon, for his part, seemed to realize how much of a loss he was at--but instead of growing even sourer, he looked thoughtful for a moment, before seeming to come to a conclusion.
Really, Stahn could never have been prepared for what came next. He was used to Leon's moods, to Leon's fussing. He was used to Leon walking away, or yelling, or arguing over pointless things.
He was not, however, used to Leon stepping forward almost calculatingly, eyes narrowed somewhat in both thought and determination. Strangely, Stahn almost felt the urge to step back, which was obviously ridiculous; this was Leon after all. He was usually the one trying to get closer to Leon, when he would let him.
Still, he couldn't help the questioning, "Leon?" that escaped him, and for a moment Leon met his eyes, an almost thoughtful look on his face. It was an expression Stahn was pretty sure he'd never seen from Leon before, but that thought was quickly shoved aside by Leon stepping forward again, and now they were pretty close, and this was...
This was strange. Definitely, definitely strange.
(But even as he had to fight the urge to step back, there was also the sensation that this wasn't a bad strange at all.)
Still, Leon's only response was another step forward, properly up in Stahn's personal space now, so close that there were only a scant few inches between their chests, and he still hadn't responded, and so Stahn had to ask again, "Leon?"
Whatever he was expecting for an answer, it wasn't Leon reaching up to cup his cheek. Now Stahn knew something was very strange, and he was startled enough to just stare, though he could feel his face heating up too. Leon was never this bold about this sort of thing. This really was Leon, right? Was something strange happening here?
Leon took in his expression for a moment, and seemed satisfied with it; he smirked (that was a legitimate smirk, and Stahn wasn't sure he liked how much he liked that expression on Leon's face), but his hand didn't linger there. Instead, he continued onwards, hand sliding forward to bury itself in Stahn's mane of hair, and the movement caused a shiver to run up his spine, even as he was still left staring at Leon in pure and simple shock.
Nobody would blame him, really; this was almost hard to believe it was Leon, but nonetheless he didn't back down, instead tilting his face up to look more closely at Stahn, and for a moment their faces were tantalizingly close, and Stahn considered testing his luck. Sometimes Leon let him kiss him, especially when they were alone and nobody else was around, and considering how Leon was acting right now, maybe...?
Except then Leon was speaking, a simple, petulant, "I don't intend to share you, I hope you're aware."
Stahn blinked. Between Leon's actions and how close that face was, he was a little dazed, and it took him a moment to catch up--but when he did, it all clicked. That's what Leon was worried about? That's what had made him look so grumpy? It was almost laughable to think that Leon could be jealous of people who Stahn hardly knew, but Stahn wasn't laughing--he couldn't, not with Leon this close, Leon's fingers burying more firmly in Stahn's hair, Leon's other hand grasping his wrist tightly.
This was... possessiveness, wasn't it?
This was Leon staking a claim, and honestly, it was very hard for Stahn to mind that. Leon inspected him calculatingly for a moment, leaning in just a little further, and Stahn was pretty sure he stopped breathing for a moment, and then there it was, Leon tugging (and none-too-gently at that, and it did hurt but there were certainly more important things on Stahn's mind) at Stahn's hair to drag him those scant few centimeters into a kiss. It was still mostly unpracticed and unpolished, but even so there was an edge to it unlike the general chasteness behind the kisses Stahn gave Leon when able, and when Leon broke away, Stahn's legs were unsteady.
Leon's cheeks were flushed as well then, breathing a little ragged, and at least there was that solace that Stahn wasn't the only one affected by this, but then it was Stahn's turn, because he could recognize the edge of uncertainty to the sideways glance Leon gave him, and he was quick to step forward, engulfing Leon in a hug.
Really, all there was to say to that was, "I know", because he didn't intend to share Leon either, not like that, and he didn't intend to make Leon share him. This was their relationship, one that was necessary to the both of them, and he knew for a fact that they were both happy for it, just like this.
Why would Stahn ever want to change something that was this perfect?
And feeling Leon slowly relax from the tenseness he'd clearly been carrying since Stahn walked in was satisfying in a way that nothing else was and nothing else would ever be, and Stahn sighed, burying his face in Leon's hair gently.
This was fine, just like this--even if, admittedly, he hadn't exactly minded Leon as he'd been, even if Stahn was also pretty sure that it took a few years off of his life at the same time. Next time, though, he'd be more prepared, if it ever happened again.
And in the meantime...he'd just do his best to make sure that Leon never doubted his devotion to him again. That was a task that Stahn was going to enjoy.
(And later, Leon ate the cookies Stahn had been given, so he was pretty sure all was right in the world anyway.)
