12:00 am
When he looked at the digital clock, it read 12:00 am.
It was amazing, the technology of this place. Utterly amazing.
Except right now Hanbei could have really done without.
He had less to do here—less work, fewer expectations, less less less. There was really no reason for him to not sleep and sleep well, truly.
Midnight, and he was not yet asleep.
Granted, he’d been awake much later than that on any number of occasions…but it wasn’t necessary here.
How he hated unnecessary things.
With a sigh, Hanbei sat up and then stood, coughing quietly into a hand before moving to get dressed. Perhaps it was unnecessary, but he could, at the very least, get some things done in the time he had.
1:00 am
Cleaned up and seated at the desk in the dark, Hanbei considered the situation.
He could turn on a light.
However there were a few other people in the house and the chances that it would wake one of them were rather high—they only exponentially increased when on took into consideration that one was (also?) Hanbei (though he gritted his teeth slightly at the thought, the fact that he was supposedly another version of himself meant that he would expect him to wake up at unusual things) and that Mitsunari, already a light sleeper, seemed even worse off than Hanbei remembered (but perhaps that is to be expected from their deaths…).
Dark thoughts for a dark morning, he mused.
And then he stood and fetched his papers—he would work by moonlight, since the moon was, for once, out and not covered by Inaba’s gloomy clouds.
He knew it strained his eyes.
But Hanbei really didn’t care.
2:00 am
It was a brush outside the window, a shadowy form, that broke Hanbei out of his reverie and concentration.
He paused, blinking out the window.
…Ah. Takeda’s ninja again.
Hideyoshi and Mitsunari were still stumped as to their mysterious deliverer of bentos, but Hanbei had figured it out long ago. It really hadn’t been that complicated at all, not when he’d put together all of the information.
But it was currently harmless and it was keeping Mitsunari fed (he’d tried to offer them to Hanbei but Hanbei had refused them).
So he said nothing and allowed it to pass.
Until the day it was no longer harmless, and then there would be hell to pay for the Takeda ninja.
3:00 am
A yawn escaped him now, and Hanbei considered sleep once.
And then he dismissed it and went instead to make tea.
He sipped his tea as he put aside his work for the moment, glancing up at the sky and watching the moon.
It was a quiet, peaceful night, and that was baffling as well.
Peace, that was.
Peace.
It was…
4:00 am
The tea was cold on the table in a limp hand; the other found a head pillowed on it.
5:00 am
Hanbei blinked open his eyes.
Ah…perhaps he had really ought to go to bed.
But it was far too late to sleep now, wasn’t it?
Instead, Hanbei sipped his tea, made a face at the cold, and drank it anyway, waiting for the signs of a woken household.
6:00 am
Unsurprisingly, it was Mitsunari who stirred first. He was often up and out and about to perform many of the errands the Toyotomi servants used to…
Hanbei pulled himself out of those thoughts when Mitsunari wandered out into the living area and paused at seeing Hanbei seated there, blinking.
And then he hastily bowed.
“Good morning, Hanbei-sama,” he murmured, perfectly loyal.
Ah. Perhaps not everything had been wrong.
“Good morning, Mitsunari-kun,” came the smooth response.
There was a pause in which Mitsunari stood awkwardly, uncertainly, not moving—
And Hanbei chuckled quietly. “Do not allow me to keep you.”
Do not allow him to keep anyone.
7:00 am
Mitsunari made him tea before he left.
Hanbei inspected the steam drifting slowly into the air from the top of the cup and thought it fitting, but he did not drink it, not yet.
8:00 am
It was about time for Hideyoshi to rise.
Hanbei noted this and warmed up the tea Mitsunari had made so that he could offer it to Hideyoshi when he did rise.
It was early yet in the day. Hanbei did not need it.
There wasn’t much Hanbei needed right now.
9:00 am
It was raining.
Hanbei noted this when he stepped outside and was confronted with a facefull of rain.
For having been awake for nine hours already, he had been surprisingly unobservant, he noted with a sour look.
It was wet here, very wet, and that was something that Hanbei did not enjoy at all.
But there were things to do and so he set his shoulders and walked out into the rain.
10:00 am
Hanbei dripped as he stood at the edge of the river, peering into it idly. He still had errands to run, tasks to do that he only trusted himself to do (but that was truly nothing new, not for Hanbei--)
He coughed.
And again.
And again.
Overdoing it?
Tch—nonsense.
It was just a bit of rain and just a bit lack of sleep.
He’d been through so much worse.
11:00 am
An hour later he had found his way to the housewives he had charmed their very first night there.
He charmed them again with a smile but didn’t allow them to invite him inside, despite the rain—he still had things to do.
It just paid to check on connections, and he was most certainly not going to miss out on that.
12:00 pm
It was still raining.
Hanbei almost lowered himself to muttering in distaste as he walked down the wet streets.
Almost.
1:00 pm
And then—relief from the rain.
But it had not stopped raining and he had not gone inside.
Thus, the only answer was—
Hanbei looked up. Hideyoshi leaned over him, umbrella up, and frowned, but it was a frown of concern more than anything else (Hanbei knew him well enough to know--).
“Hanbei. You are soaked.” It was a quiet rumble but the implications, ah the many implications behind it—
Hideyoshi was displeased.
He was displeased because Hanbei was wet.
Well then.
“Walk with me, Hanbei,” finally came the order.
Hanbei knew that in reality, it was a request—a reversal, and he accepted.
2:00 pm
For some reason, Hideyoshi had deemed it necessary they go to Junes and then to the clothing department and then to the coats and then when they left there was a new coat around Hanbei’s shoulders.
He tsk’d at the useless expenditure but sometimes Hideyoshi was impossible to argue with.
It helped him hide his cough, at least.
3:00 pm
They stopped at the coffee house then.
By the time they had reached a consensus on what to do after this, Hideyoshi had procured warm drinks for the both of them.
Hanbei accepted his with graceful reluctance.
More useless expenditures.
4:00 pm
It was getting late, now, fog crawling in. When they headed towards the Toyotomi household late in the day, the lights were on and the house warm.
Hanbei decided that his other self won points (maybe one or two at the most) for being sensible enough for that, for now he was shivering ever so slightly.
5:00 pm
While Hanbei was debating between doing work or taking one of those glorious modern things called a shower, his answer was picked for him.
He finally decided that he would dry and get warm all on his own—there was still much to be finished.
His desk was spotless.
…
…
…This meant that someone had stolen his work.
It was about then that Hanbei spied the note in Hideyoshi’s handwriting stating that he had gone out with the other Hanbei to check on things elsewhere but Hanbei should really clean up and get some rest.
…Hanbei was torn between a chuckle or a sigh.
It appeared he was wearing off on Hideyoshi despite his very best efforts to the contrary.
So he went to have a bath.
6:00 pm
By the time he had gotten dressed again, the house already smelled like some form of a basic—but warm—dinner.
Mitsunari was probably home; Hideyoshi never cooked and he had not been there to do the cooking himself, and so…
But then, Mitsunari was happy to do whatever he could if it was for them, and so Hanbei was not surprised that he was offered a plate of food before he’d even stepped into the kitchen.
…He supposed he could eat this meal.
While Mitsunari was so hopeful that he would.
7:00 pm
Now Hanbei went on a thorough search for his work.
He was having no luck at all and was approaching a delicately bad mood when Hideyoshi walked through the door again with the other Hanbei.
…The other Hanbei with Hideyoshi.
It grated as well and he frowned, jaw set.
“Hideyoshi—“ Hanbei stepped forward, tone on that edge of confrontation that Hideyoshi had long ago learned to dread from his strategist.
But he was prepared this time.
“Come, Hanbei. I have a task for you.”
Hanbei blinked at that—but he left the other Hanbei behind to follow Hideyoshi as he walked into Hanbei’s room.
And then Hideyoshi turned to face him and paused.
“A task, you said?” Hanbei questioned—not quite impatient but he’d always been aware of wasted time and this was no exception—
“Yes.” Hideyoshi crossed his arms, staring down his strategist for once and said, “I wish for you to get your proper rest tonight.”
Hanbei blinked.
And again.
And stared some more. His proper—
“I have noticed your lack of sleep,” Hideyoshi continued. “You are of no use to anyone if you do not take care of your health.”
It was an order.
There was no way around that.
And so Hanbei sighed and bowed his head.
“Understood.” And then he glanced up with a bit of a smirk and continued, “Will my work appear on my desk now?”
Hideyoshi at least had the grace to look a little embarrassed.
8:00 pm
Hanbei sipped his tea and pondered the rain, seated comfortably by the window now.
It was interesting, wasn’t it?
He’d gotten up extra early to get extra work done.
And he’d actually lost time. For the last half of the day had been…
9:00 pm
Hideyoshi closed the door with a satisfied nod; he could not force Hanbei to sleep, but Hanbei was in bed and at the very least relaxing and that was all he’d truly wanted. The last thing he needed was Hanbei overdoing it.
The last thing he’d allow was for Hanbei to harm himself through overwork here, where the country had already been unified through Hanbei’s very hardworking efforts.
Perhaps he’d delayed his strategist some today.
But it was hardly a waste of time if it meant taking care of him for those hours.
This household was under his domain.
Hideyoshi would most certainly take care of it.
10:00 pm
11:00 pm
12:00 am
It was with an ever so slight smile gracing his face that Hanbei slept—
It was easy to relax, after all, when the man he trusted and served was there to watch out for all of them.
