Shinjiro’s plans for the evening are simple.

Their leader told them they were off the hook for Tartarus early on, before dipping out for the evening through the front door of the dorm to do whatever it was could possibly be on the agenda at this time of night. If not for the fact that Shinji’s well aware that their leader’s got a surprisingly sensible approach to life, he’d be worried about it. It is raining, which seems like a pretty miserable time to head out, but it’s not like he can fuss over every last change in the weather. He probably doesn’t have to be worried, so he’ll go ahead and leave it alone for now.

That means Shinji’s left to his own devices, and he’s got some very low key, casual plans to reward himself with an article he’s had bookmarked for at least a week and a half. It’s titled 12 Important Tips for Sous Vide Success, and he’s ready to rip it apart if need be, or just enjoy learning something new. The cooking magazine is tucked beneath three stacks of math books he hasn’t touched in over two years on the desk in his room just in case, and he thinks it’s finally time to unearth it.

Takeba and Iori dispersed already for the evening, one to study and the other to play a video game of some sort, and Yamagishi lingers in the dining room, tapping away at her laptop. Amada is in the dorm as well, though he retreated to his room as soon as Leader said they weren’t heading to Tartarus, and who knew with Aigis. For all he knows, she’s helping out Mitsuru with something or other.

It isn’t as though Shinji has to do a headcount, but it comes naturally to him. He doesn’t feel as though he can relax until he’s figured out where everyone is, even if he’ll never, ever put words to it in anyone’s earshot.

Regardless, that leaves only one person, and the thumping of his shoes on the stairs as he trots downstairs makes Shinji look up from his seat immediately. There he is.

Akihiko’s dressed for a jog, and Koromaru’s practically vibrating at his heels, tail wagging eagerly.

He glances over, their eyes meet, and he waves as he heads towards the door with Koromaru.

And there go Shinji’s plans for a quiet evening, because that’s something he just cannot let go.

“The hell are you doing?”

Aki pauses, quirking an eyebrow back at him. “I’m taking Koromaru for a walk.”

The obviously goes unspoken, and Shinji scoffs.

“Not that.” Aki isn’t the only one who can infuse his words with the essence of obviously. “It’s raining outside.”

Aki blinks at him blankly.

Shinji stands with a huff, gesturing to Koro. “You can’t take him out there like that. What if he gets water in his ears? That sorta thing can lead to an ear infection in dogs.”

Koromaru, aware that he’s being talked about, but not necessarily the context, barks as if in punctuation. It gives Akihiko pause, though, and he frowns as he looks down at the dog. Koro, panting cheerfully, slowly wags his tail in response. It is obvious immediately that Akihiko is now caught between a rock and a hard place, between wanting to go for that run for his training and not wanting to potentially cause Koromaru harm, and as the moment drags on with no resolution, Shinji sighs.

“Fine, I’ve got it, just a sec.” He shuffles over to the lobby closet, expression dour–this could’ve been his reading time, but now instead he’s gotta look after a certain dumbass that, unfortunately, he cares about more than anyone.

And Akihiko, too, he tells himself belatedly, knowing full well that he hadn’t been thinking of Koromaru at all when his thoughts began to stray into the sentimental.

He yanks a little raincoat with a hood, doggy-sized and bright yellow, from the closet, and chucks it at Akihiko. Aki catches it, and stares at it.

“What–”

“Just put it on the dog,” Shinji huffs. He absolutely will not admit even on pain of death that he saw the little raincoat on one of those TV shopping programs and thought that it would look adorable on Koromaru, and bought it without even thinking twice. Nobody can ever know.

“It just showed up somewhere,” he says instead, arms crossed. Akihiko arches a skeptical eyebrow at him, but obediently crouches to put the raincoat onto Koromaru, who–absolutely does look as adorable as Shinji thought he would, if not more so. Ugh. If only he could take a picture without anyone noticing…

Akihiko straightens, clears his throat, and says, “Thanks, Shinji. We’ll be back.”

He turns towards the door again, ready to head out this time, when Shinji beans him in the back of his head with a beanie hat.

“Hey–!” Akihiko whips around again, raring for a fight, but Shinji just scoffs in return.

“What, you think you’re immune to takin’ care of yourself? Put the hat on, moron.”

Akihiko looks again, frowns a little, and scoops the hat up off the ground, looking it over carefully. Shinji, slowly processing that he threw one of his own hats at Akihiko, shuffles in place and looks away. It isn’t the first time they’ve shared clothing, but it never gets less embarrassing.

Perhaps sensing the atmosphere (for once in his life, Shinji thinks, fonder than he’d like to admit to), Akihiko doesn’t say anything. Instead, he tugs the beanie onto his head and over his ears, and then turns to look at Shinji once more.

“Alright, now I’m taking Koro for a run.”

Akihiko pauses as if waiting for any further protests, but Shinji just moves towards the couch again as if to wave him off, and with a bit of a shrug and a light roll of his eyes. There’s a lighter tone to his voice, though, as he nods to Koromaru at his feet and reaches out to open the door.

“C’mon, Koro, let’s get training.”

Shinji flops heavily back onto the couch as the door shuts behind Akihiko and Koromaru. Thoughts of the magazine he’d been excited to read have long been superseded by the thought of just how soaked they’re both going to be when they get back, even with the precautions he insisted on (Akihiko more than Koro, undoubtedly). And so, after a moment’s thought, he stands with a sigh.

He’ll grab some towels, and maybe make some hot cocoa. Just in case. It’d be a huge pain in the ass for everyone in the dorm if Akihiko gets sick; Shinji knows better than anyone how much of a baby he can be about it.

That’s the only reason he would ever be so doting over Akihiko, of course.

Or so Shinji tells himself, knowing full well that that isn’t the reason at all, as he busies himself in the kitchen.
